Le Wine Buffs Survive Manhattan (and so does the city)

TechEnology - Snooth, Ziff Davis & Enjoy BordeauxSo as it turns out, New York is a pretty damn cool place!  My first time in NYC was filled with as much sightseeing, vino networking, shopping, eating and drinking as one could possibly fit into 3.5 days.  I was in the city for the first time on another adventure as Le Wine Buff for the Bordeaux Wine Council (CIVB)’s Enjoy Bordeaux campaign, on a fully paid business trip.  While the point of the trip was to attend the Snooth & Ziff Davis TechEnology event and talk about the full awesomeness of affordable Bordeaux wine alongside my LWB colleagues, I was determined to experience as much NYC as I could handle…and I succeeded.

TechEnology - Courtesy of Enjoy Bordeaux & CreativeFeedHeld at the new digital & design campus General Assembly, we walked to the space in Union Square from our hotel, the Martinique.  Rob Moshein, Erin McGrath (Twitter) and I hoofed it pretty quickly actually, as we were running a little late to scope out the wines and discuss them with the servers.  Once there we met up with our fellow LWB in arms, Mollie Battenhouse (Twitter), Rebecca Chapa (Twitter) and Megan Wiig.

The event was just an awesome mob of mainly younger wine and tek-oriented vino enthusiasts, with a distinct flair for networking.  I was hoping to spend more time sipping the wines as they got more air, but I was all wrapped up in interesting discussions about fascinating new intersections between wine and technology.  Indeed, the only people missing were the minds behind that digital wine ingenues at VinTank.

Tweetelier - CreativeFeedHighlights from the event for me included meeting Dr. Andrew Waterhouse, a luminary in viticulture and enology research at my alma mater, UC Dvais.  He is one of the pioneers for research around resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant found in wine and the subject of one of my articles for Mutineer Magazine.  Another biggie was the newly invented Tweetelier (Twitter) for that particular event, in fact!  Created by members of CreativeFeed, the creative minds behind Enjoy Bordeaux.  You attach the little transmitter to a bottle and setup the radio receiver along with the software and then BLAMMO, a unique tweet each time a bottle is poured during your event.  Simple, yet awesome.  Shopping in the Garment DistrictThe last highlight was the afterparty dinner at craft, Tom Colicchio‘s flagship restaurant, he of Top Chef fame.  It was another epic, 3+ hour long dinner, quite reminiscent of our meals while together in Bordeaux last summer. It was a tremendous meal and completely lived up to the hype. Yum!

The rest of my time in the big city was spent tearing around trying to see and taste as much of Manhattan as possible and to find the appropriate gift for the Lady.  This involved lots of coffee in small places, beautiful silence at the Public Library, oysters and bubbly with Rob at Grand Central Station, drinks in a oversized library and green-lit escalator and drizzly rain with mind-blowing lighting effects in Times Square.  Very good times and I left with a deep appreciation of the subway and taxi system of the Big Apple.

Very good times and I can’t wait to go back to judge the 2011 Today’s Bordeaux competition and select the new Top 100 Affordable Bordeaux in June.  Cheers!

Le Wine Buffs Take Manhattan

Le Wine Buff - Enjoy BordeauxEnjoy Bordeaux‘s Le Wine Buffs are back and we’re thirsty.

This time we’re taking on New York City and Manhattan is gonna stumble down in a vinous frenzy of affordable Bordeaux wine!  We’re the wine sponsor for this year’s TechEnology wine event held by Enjoy Bordeaux partner Snooth and tech media publishing titan Ziff Davis.  Held at the newly renovated General Assembly, the event will mix some of the icons of tech, publishing and the wine biz and look to do some serious vino mind melding.

I’m excited to be pouring and talking about these wines at the event because I think Bordeaux is coming into another renaissance of exposure for it’s thousands of high quality, affordable wines and their Chateaux, all across the greater appellation.  Much of this belief was built during our visit to Bordeaux last summer.  This event promises to be “a private, networking event recognizing the wine world’s most technologically forward people, business and practices”…and these are the peeps that need to know Bordeaux!

See you on the Right Coast vinopanions, and cheers!

Today's Bordeaux BBQ & Le Wine Buff in France!

Le Wine Buff - Enjoy BordeauxOne of the best parts of being Le Wine Buff for Enjoy Bordeaux is that I get to try a lot of very wonderful, high QPR wines from Bordeaux.  Indeed, all five of the Buffs have been very busy filming short tasting videos of each of Today’s Bordeaux: The Top 100 Affordable Bordeaux for 2010.  Later this year we will have 100 Days of Bordeaux and debut a new tasty and affordable wine from Bordeaux each day, all hand-picked by a jury of esteemed wine experts.

During Memorial Day Weekend here in the States, I was able to taste and film 8 of these wines all in one gigantic HD-driven swoop.  Clearly however, this created a major conundrum…what to do with the leftover wine??  Hmm, holiday weekend, sun and no work…DUDE we should BBQ!!  And thus driven by vino need, The Lady and I set about inviting friends over and purchasing copious amounts of food with which to eat with our many bottles of opened Bordeaux.

Today's Bordeaux 2010We had no trouble enticing friends over with promises of good food and great wine, really why would we?  We were all taken by the level of quality in each of these wines, despite coming from many different parts of Bordeaux.  They all paired quite well with almost all of the food that had that day, whether it be salads, snacks or various types of BBQ’d meats.  The biggest comment that I heard was that everyone was taken with the balance that they found in each wine between the acidity (great for food), the tannin and the fruit. Myself, I was enthralled with the 2005 Château Marquis de Terme Margaux.  This wine was showing beautifully that day, filled with deep black fruit, new leather and wet earth that were nicely complemented by the fine but firm tannins and the great acidity.  Yum.

Today's Bordeaux 2010Aside from tasty BBQ’s, exciting developments continue to take place with Enjoy Bordeaux and Le Wine Buff, my dear readers!  In just a couple days I will travel to Bordeaux courtesy of the Bordeaux Wine Council along with my fellow Wine Buffs for a intensive, week-long look into the Bordelais and their wine.  There we will also hook up with the crazy kids from Mutineer Magazine for some filming and background for upcoming articles in that fine mag and also complete the remaining Today’s Bordeaux 2010 tasting videos.

All of the Today’s Bordeaux 2010 wines from that tasty day have been tagged with “LWB2010BBQ” if you would like to log them in your own WineLog.  The photos have also been uploaded to my Flickr.  I look forward to talking about my travels around Bordeaux when I get back.  Cheers!

Le Wine Buff Returns

Le Wine Buff - Enjoy BordeauxMany of you delightful readers may remember a very cool pilot project that I worked on late last year called Le Wine Buff, part of Enjoy Bordeaux (Twitter, Facebook).  Sponsored by the Bordeaux Wine Council (CIVB), it was an innovative re-introduction of affordable Bordeaux wine to the American public.  As one of the six original “Le Wine Buff’s”, I helped spread the word about the great value and QPR that can be found in red, white and dessert Bordeaux wines at all price points below $25 via email, FAQ and live video chat.  The program took a winter break to expand and get even better and we’re now ready to relaunch our BDX mission!

Look for an expanded schedule of live video chat from our team of six ‘Buffs.  I’ll be starting off the new program 05/03/10 with my time slot every Monday night, 7-10pm PST.  If you need a refresher, check out this great intro by new Le Wine Buff Megan.  Simply sign up and become a member to participate in any of our video chat sessions.  You can follow the Twitter feed of with the hash tag #LeWineBuff.

Enjoy BordeauxThe team at Enjoy Bordeaux has also been hard at work to greatly improve the wine search engine on the site, where you can now search by wine name, region or key term and find where to buy those tasty wines near you or online.  In addition, we’ve also teamed up with the Bordeaux Wine Council to film short tasting videos of every single one of the Today’s Bordeaux 100 Top Affordable Bordeaux wines for 2010. Our Events section has also been expanded to include all of the many events featuring Bordeaux wine across the US.  If you have an event that you’d like to post to the site, feel free to contact me and I can help get it posted.

Lastly, but maybe personally most excitingly, all of Le Wine Buff’s will be traveling to Bordeaux for a week in June to become fully immersed in the Bordeaux wine culture.  We’ll be filming new video and live chats, interviewing winemakers, sommeliers and other Bordeaux wine phenoms in order to best be able to help you find the Bordeaux wines and info that you need!  I look forward to chatting with you live online…cheers!
